History of Our Church Name

The church name has varied through the years, apparently without official sanction or notice. First references in the 1830's were to an Independent Church of Christ in Versailles. The 1852 deed for the present church location was made to the trustees of the Church of Christ at Versailles.

Minutes of the church board from 1919 to 1940 refer to the Versailles Christian Church. Yet in this same time frame the program for the dedication of the remodeled church on April 13, 1924 names the Church of Christ. In February, 1940, board minutes changed, with no motion or official notice, to the First Christian Church and references continue as such.

In 1968 the name Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was adopted by the International Convention.
